April 2010
Hi every body-
I hope the rains weren’t too bad for people, and that you all made it
thru ok. It was nice to see the sun and feel its heat after the last few soggy
days, and it made for a beautiful
Easter.
Here are some updates from the past month. March 6 was Ruffles ’N Beaus
Beginner’s Ball. They had a very successful dance with approximately eleven
squares. It started off a little shaky…actually it almost didn’t start at all!
The hall they usually use was double booked. Fortunately for them the town
found them another hall, and one short mystery ride later, we were all able to
dance and have fun.
We made a good showing at the retrieval to Town Howlers. Its nice when
clubs we visit call to the floor and allow our beginners the opportunity to
practice what they’ve learned. We all had a great time, with a lot of laughter
thrown into the mix.
The Spring Swing was a good dance, and had a large crowd also. It was
nice dancing to different callers. Art Anthony made an appearance, and looked
good! It went a long way to reassuring people he was well on the road to
recovery. After the dance approximately 40 of us went to dinner at J&Ds. Its
always a fun time when we are able to get together and do two of our favorite
things…dance and eat.

Here is an updated list of coming events:
April 9 is a Country Chicken Dinner and Square Dancing
event
at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Woonsocket. It's to benefit the ELCA World
Hunger Agriculture projects. Please see Eric for details and tickets. The
interest in this is high and the tickets are going fast. Don’t miss out!
April 10 is an away dance at Killingly Range. So far we
have 8 couples signed up to go. This is billed as Traditional Square dancing.
I’m told anyone can walk off the street with no experience and have a great
time. It’s the perfect opportunity for our beginners, and I’m glad to see a
number of them have already signed up. This is casual dress, jeans or whatever
you’re comfortable in is just fine. There will be live music to dance to as
well. If you haven’t already done so, please consider joining us.
April 19 is our class graduation and pot luck dinner. We
need people to get there early to set up, approximately 5-5:30PM. We hope to
eat at about 6:15PM. The graduation ceremony will immediately follow. After
that, there will be dancing and games. Its always a good time and we look
forward to seeing everyone there.
April 23 and 24 is Convention. I know a large number of club
members are already signed up to go. This is a Thursday to Sunday event, but
you can go any day or days that work for you. Maybe we can all get together in
Biddeford and go to dinner one night??!!
April 26 is our Annual meeting, and fast approaching. We
have four positions available on the board and need your help. Please see a
board member if you have any questions. If you’re interested in running please
see Elaine Vota, Bob Keith, or Dick Champagne. This will be a half night of
workshop. We will end at approximately 8:30PM and then have our
meeting. Please keep in mind that we must have a quorum of club members
present to vote and elect new board members. Your attendance is needed.
May 16 is SEMCA's King and Queen Ball. The dance will be
at Plymouth High School
from 2-6pm. Congratulations to Bob Keith and Denise as our King and Queen
representatives. Also, Swinging Squares will be hosting the food table. We
will be looking for food donations (i.e. finger foods, fruits, veggies, snacks)
as well as volunteers to run the table that day. Elaine and Maryanne have
graciously agreed to coordinate the running of the food table. In the coming
weeks you may be approached to help. This year we have also decided to make a
basket for the Silent Auction. If anyone would like to donate to the table
individually however, all will be appreciated and welcome. If you need
admission tickets, see Paul Barnum or myself.
Summer plus workshops begin in June. Plans are in the
works for a summer get together at Medieval Manor, as well as for our annual
club picnic in August. There’s an outdoor dance at Mattapoisett coming up July.
Plenty of dancing and good times to keep everyone busy.

Other news and notes
. We still need someone in the kitchen for the month of May. Please give
consideration to volunteering for less than an hour a week 4 weeks in the month.
We’ve received some good ideas for our benefit dances and the board has
settled on two. We will be doing a “Thank the Vets” Dance in November (With
focus on a charity helping local vets) as mentioned in the last newsletter. In
discussing it further the board has decided to go in a different direction for
the second benefit dance. We will be “Dancing for Books.” I have made contact
with an organization, Reach out and Read (referred to us by our own Stephanie
Dionne) and am waiting for a response. More details to follow.
Last but not least, please don’t forget to renew your membership for the
coming year. Its still only $5.00 per person. If you plan on running for the
board or voting at the annual meeting, you must be a dues paid member. Don’t
forget to check the website regularly for any news, events or changes.
Thank you every body for making this club the success it is!
See you in a square,
Lisa
