FEBRUARY 2010
Well here we are, February already.
I don’t know about you but I am SO looking forward to spring and a break in this
cold weather !!!
Our dance in January was a success, approximately seven squares dancing. The
recently closed club Side Splitters dusted off their
dancing shoes and brought a square to the floor, once again enjoying the
calls of their club caller, Dave Perrault. We even managed to have a couple of
"class" dancers join us on the floor. A good time was had by all.
Here is an updated list of coming events:
Friday, February 5
is our Beginner's Ball, with our own Bob and Henry. This is a wonderful time
for all of our beginner dancers to come and test what you've learned. This dance
is for YOU! All club members are invited and encouraged to come and support our
class and to join in the fun.
February 5 and 6 is the 7th annual T 'N T Jubilee weekend with
national caller Tony Oxendine, and Ted Lizzotte. You have the choice of one
dance session (1 night), or all three (the weekend). This is for the more
experienced dancer, and guaranteed to be a good time.
February 20
is our club dance.
Bob Butler will be calling and Harriet Clarke will be cuing. This is our
"Dance for Dinners" dance. All foods collected will be donated to the R.I. Food
bank. If you haven’t already, now is a good time to begin watching for sales
and collecting
non perishable food items. We will have a box here if you want to bring
items in, and will continue this until the night of the dance. Due to the
generosity of square dancers, we collected a large amount of food last year, and
we would like to continue in that tradition. Any questions see a board member.
Also Town Howlers will be raiding that night, so we will need
finger foods please.
February 28
is the Tri State Winter Ball in Manchester N.H. at the Mill-A-Round Center from
2-5pm. Originally we thought to arrange a bus trip, but unfortunately that
didn’t work out. All that means is that those of us who are going will either
caravan or carpool. Its a fun dance, and a great opportunity to get out there
and dance with other beginner dancers from all over New England. This dance is
geared specifically for beginners, and is "angled" by veteran dances who will be
there to partner and support you. Its a stress free, fun filled environment,
with the opportunity to hear different callers. Please consider joining us for
this fun time. Any questions please see Marge.
March 6 is Ruffles ’N Beaus Beginner’s Ball. If anyone is
interested maybe we can get a group together with our beginners class and head
over to the dance.
April 19 is our class graduation and pot luck dinner. Family and
friends are welcome to come and see first hand what you have learned. More
information to follow.
April 26 is our Annual meeting. This will be a half night of
workshop. We will end at approximately. 830 and then and have our meeting.
May 16 is SEMCA's King and Queen Ball. The dance will be at
Plymouth High School from
2-6pm. Soon we will be looking for a King and Queen to represent the club. It
holds no obligation, other than attending the Ball itself. In appreciation,
Swinging Squares will give a years worth of
free dances (2 passes for each of our monthly dances from September to
May) to the chosen couple. Should you win the crown at the Ball, you will
receive free passes to
other club dances as well as a minimal cash prize. Also Swinging Squares will
be hosting the food table this year. We will be looking for food donations
(i.e. finger foods, fruits, veggies, snacks) as well as volunteers to run the
table that day. If you are interested, or have any questions please speak to
Lisa.
Other news and notes
Our list of volunteers to help out in the kitchen is just about filled.
I think we have only one month left open now. Thank you to those who have
signed up, and thank you in advance to those who may still do so.
In the coming month the board will be naming our dances for the next
dance season. Approximately two years ago we began giving back to the
community. We did this by having two themed dances, Dance for Dinners and Warm
Hands Warm Hearts. We would like to continue in this tradition and are looking
for ideas for two new causes. If anyone has any suggestions please talk to a
member of the board. We would really like the club as a whole making the
decision in this and can only do that with your ideas.
As I mentioned in the coming events
Graduation is in April. This is also the time of year when we order
badges. Graduating members will receive their badge from the club, but you will
need to see your class coordinators to let them know what type of badge you want
(pinned or magnet), name, caller, cuer bars, etc. The club will buy graduated
dancers the pinned badge at no cost to you, anything else you will be
responsible for. It is also the time for anyone else to place an order should
you need to. We do this once a year to avoid high shipping and handling costs,
so if you would like to order something please see Edythe as soon as possible.
Also as mentioned our Annual meeting is in April. We will have 4 open positions
to the board. I mention this now because we are in need of a nominating
committee. We are looking for motivated people (usually three) to approach
club members and find those who are interested in joining the board. We need
your help in this. If you are interested, please don’t hesitate to speak with
Marge or any member of the board.
That's all for now...keep warm everyone and keep dancing!
