March 2010
Hi every body-
Let’s start with a brief review of past events. February 5th was our
Beginner’s Ball. It was a great success with a lot of our new dancers
attending, as well as a group from Ruffles ’N Beaus. There were plenty of
people to angel so no one sat out a dance unless they wanted too, and there
wasn’t a lot of that happening! There was music and dancing, but more
importantly lots of fun and laughter. The lessons seemed to have paid off, and
it showed as our dancers really shined that night. They should all be very
proud of themselves.
Our Dance for Dinners in February was a phenomenal success. We had
approximately eleven squares in attendance, with Town Howlers and Hayloft
Steppers raiding. Due to the generosity of our club members, and the many
people joining us that night we were able to collect 9 cases of food. The food
was delivered to the Smithfield Food Bank on Tuesday. I’ve since received a
very nice thank you note, which will be on the treasurer’s table should anyone
want to see it.
The T ‘n T weekend was a lot of fun. There was approximately 8 squares
in attendance. As expected Ted and Tony really put us thru our paces, with
extensions of calls that were very challenging. It was a lot of fun to dance to
them both, with their great singing voices, as well as creative choreography.
Never a dull moment there!
The Tri State Winter Ball in Manchester was well attended by the
Swinging Squares, 23 people in fact. People arranged car pooling ahead of time
and with directions in hand, made it to the Mill A Round Center with little
fuss. There were apx. 9 squares at the ball, and again, noone sat unless they
wanted too. After the dance our group went out to dinner and enjoyed a great
meal at the Puritan
Restaurant. With Mother Nature’s cooperation the day was a huge success.
Here is an updated list of coming events:
March 6 is Ruffles ’N Beaus Beginner’s Ball. There will
be a group of people going to the dance that night. Please join us and help
support of the new dancers in their shining hour.
March 12 is the retrieval at Town Howlers. There is a
sign up sheet on the table and directions can be made available to any who need
them. Please join us in visiting this club. Their visit to us in February is
what helped make our dance the success it was.
March 21 is the Spring Swing, 1pm to 4pm at the East
Smithfield Neighborhood Center. This is a Federation sponsored dance, and
required Rhody Rover dance. You will need this signature to earn your badge.
Any questions please contact Art Anthony at
401-434-2309.
April 19 is our class graduation and pot luck dinner.
Family and friends are welcome to come and see first hand what you have
learned. More information to follow.
April 26 is our Annual meeting. This will be a half night
of workshop. We will end at apx. 830 and then and have our meeting.
May 16 is SEMCA's King and Queen Ball. The dance will be
at Plymouth High School
from 2-6pm. I have begun to actively seek a King and Queen to represent the
club. If you are interested please see me. Also Swinging Squares will be
hosting the food table this year. We will be looking for food donations (i.e.
finger foods, fruits,
veggies, snacks) as well as volunteers to run the table that day. Elaine and
Maryanne have graciously agreed to coordinate the running of the food table. In
the coming weeks you may be approached to help host the table. If you are
interested, or have any questions please speak to either lady, or Lisa.
Other news and notes
Sadly Kat has lost another member of her family. Her brother passed
away on February 14th. Should you wish to send your condolences her address can
be found in the Members section of the website.
Carol Cerreto recently fell and broke her hip. She’s had surgery and is
home now recovering nicely. She was fortunate when she broke her hip that it
was cracked and not shattered. This allowed them to place a pin in to help her
heal. Her address can also be found at the websites Member section.
Art Anthony has had surgery today. Please join is in sending wishes and
prayers his way for a hopeful result and recovery.
Our list of volunteers to help out in the kitchen is filled but for one
month. We still need someone for the month of May. Please give consideration
to volunteering for less than an hour a week 4 weeks in the month.
We’ve received some good ideas for our benefit dances and the board has
settled on two. We will be doing a “Thank the Vets” Dance in November (With
focus on a charity helping local vets) , and a “Critter Comfort” Dance in
February (with focus on a local animal shelter or organization).
Just a reminder, if you need a new or replacement badge to please see Edythe.
She will be approaching new dancers also.
Also as mentioned our Annual meeting is in April. We will have 4
open positions to the
board. Our nominating committee consists of Bob Keith, Elaine Vota, and Dick
Champagne. They will begin to approach club members in hopes of finding those
that are interested in joining the board. If you have not been approached, or
are interested in becoming a member of the board please don’t hesitate to speak
with them.
Just a reminder that club dues are well...due :)
Technically your dues expire at the end of this month, so we are asking if
you're interested in continuing with your membership to the club, or joining
new, that you take care of that now. Please see Steve on any Monday night.
Dues are (again this year) $5 per person and run from March to March.
If you plan on attending the annual
board meeting and wish to vote you must be a member in "good standing"
which means a dues paid member. Also if you are interested in a position on
the board you must be a "dues paid" member.
As always if you have any questions please see a board member.
We’ve got a busy couple of months ahead…remember to check the website for
information.
Thank you every body for making this club the success it is!
See you in a square,
Lisa
