THE SCOOP SWINGING SQUARES NEWSLETTER Nov 2010
Hello, everybody! We are having a very busy fall season here at Swinging Squares!
We started off with our September dance, with Lori Morin calling and Henry Barry cueing. Lori was able to fill in for the evening at short notice. We appreciate Lori’s being available, and we all had a great dance!
Our October Creature Feature dance was also fun, with Kevin Bersing calling and Henry Barry cueing. We had a few “creatures” among the dancers there! Although attendance was low, we all had a spooktacular time!
The Swinging Squares hosted the fall RI Federation dance on October 24th. There were several callers and cuers to dance to. There were also several baskets raffled, and a table full of food that was about a mile long!
Workshop on Monday nights is going well, with the best attendance we have had in several years! We have had several questions and discussions about the new workshop schedule. The biggest question is concerning the “Demo” tips. These are meant to be a very short tip, the length of one singing call, for experienced dancers. This gives everyone else a chance to see what can be done, and it gives our hard working angels a little chance to play. “Angel” refers to the experienced dancers who come out every week as they have done for years to help people learn the joy of square dancing, and we appreciate every one of them!
Our November dance is coming up quickly, on November 20th. This will be a dance honoring our vets. Veterans who are in attendance will be recognized, and we will be taking donations to be sent to the VA hospital. On the table is a Wish List of items the VA has suggested for donations. There will be a bucket out for donations from now until December 6th. The club will be contributing its half of the Split the Pot for that dance, and any monetary donations will be used to obtain items on the Wish List. This dance will also include Rhody Rover presentations.
The club Christmas party has been set for Monday night, December 6th. There will be no charge for that night. It will be pot luck, with Santa in attendance. There will be gift exchange for those who wish to participate. If you wish to participate please bring a gift worth $5.00, men bring a gift for a man, and women bring a gift for a woman. That evening will start earlier, with setup starting around 5:30 and hoping to eat between 6:00 and 6:30.
There has also been some sad news for the club this fall. As most of you know by now, George Barrett has been diagnosed with a mass in his chest. His workup is still in progress, and the course of therapy has not yet been determined. We all hold both Marge and George in our hearts and prayers as they go through this difficult time. Meanwhile, George and Marge have both resigned their board member positions, along with the several other positions they have been holding in other square dance organizations.
The Board membership will be undergoing some changes as a result of the sad departure of two of its members. We now have a new Vice Chairperson. Please welcome Mariann DeTuccio to that position, we know she will do a great job! The Board is required to appoint two new members to replace the open positions. We have filled one position so far, and are happy to welcome Ruth Kdonian back to the Board. Our next meeting will be on November 11, and we hope to be able to fill the other position at that time.
Everyone have fun, and keep dancing!
