THE SCOOP SWINGING SQUARES NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2008
Greetings to all! We all certainly thought the excitement would die down a bit after the Holidays, but at Swinging Squares, the excitement just continues!! We have been SUPER busy. . . Here’s some of what’s going on. We held our beginners ball on February 1st, and had a good turn out despite some uncooperative weather earlier in the day. The Tri-State Callers Association will be holding their Winter Ball on February 24th…There is still room on the bus for anyone interested in going…Tickets are just $10.00 and includes the admission into the dance!! Last year the group that attended had a great time!! The SEMCA King and Queen Ball is fast approaching. That will be held on May 4th at Plymouth South High School in Plymouth MA. Tickets are just $5.00 in advance $6.00 at the door. We are looking for anyone interested in representing our club as “King and Queen”. If you are interested please let any member of the Board know. We will continue to offer “our” king and queen free admission to dances throughout the coming season. This is another great dance, and everyone is encouraged to attend. It is a Mainstream through A-1 level dance. We have chosen a Nominating Committee, Concetta Williams, Richard Lamb and Stephanie Penchuk have graciously volunteers to speak with club members and seek out those interested in running for the Board. There are 5 spots open for election. Some of the current members are interested in running for re-election. Just as a side note for clarification. This is a frequently asked question; there are no “positions to be elected to”, there are spots available on the Board. Once elections are held, the newly elected members and the currently sitting members meet and decide among themselves what positions will be filled and by whom. This is everyone’s opportunity to have a hand in how the club is run. The only prerequisite is that you be a dues paid member by the night of the General Meeting, April 21, 2008. The Hospitality Committee is putting out an urgent plea to all club members. We need help setting up the kitchen and hall for both Monday night Workshops and Dance nights through the end of the season. If you are available even for a few weeks, please see Marge Barrett so she can add you to her schedule. And as always, many, many thanks to all those who have helped out, you assistance is much appreciated! Thanks to Steve Dionne, we now have our very own website! If you haven’t been, please be sure to check out www.swingingsquares.com . Steve has done a great job with this, now we need input from everyone. Send us your pictures, articles of interest and information to pass along to club members. We will also have a listing of members accessible by our club members only. To make your information available, please see either Steve or Kat. We will NOT publish information without consent, so please be certain to let us know. Ruffles and Beau’s is holding a dance on March 1st, all are invited to attend! We are supporting a bus trip to the Barker Theater in Providence on April 10th to see You Can’t Take It With You. Those interested should see Marge Barrett for ticket information. On March 8th we are raiding the Side Splitters in No. Attleboro MA., They are due to retrieve on the 19th at our dance. Our March Dance is themed for the season…”Wearin O’ the Green”. Irish or not, be sure to join us on March 19th for our regular monthly Dance!! April is CONVENTION MONTH!!! For those of you who have been, you know what a wonderful time it is….if you haven’t been, you don’t know what you are missing!! This year’s convention will be held in Sturbridge Mass April 25, 26th . If you haven’t registered it’s not too late!! There is dancing for every level!! Please come and join us! It is sure to be a great celebration of the NESRD Convention’s 50th Anniversary! Also upcoming is the Annual Rhody Rover Summer Dance, hosted by the Surfside 8 Square Dance Club. This will be held on Saturday June 7th. If you are working toward your Rhody Rover badge this dance is a requirement. Your Board has been busy, busy, busy planning for the upcoming year! It seems like a long way away, but these things take planning, and well, we’ve been doing a lot of it!! If there is something that you would like to do, or an event you know of and would like us to consider, please be sure to let a Board member know. That’s all “The Scoop” for now…Hope everyone is getting in lots of dancing and having fun….looking forward to spring and nicer weather!! See you in a square!! |
