SWINGING SQUARES

NEWSLETTER

March 2008

Hey everyone!!

All this dancer can say is “can I catch my breath now?!” We have been SO busy… and what FUN we’ve had!!

The Tri-State Caller’s Winter was a blast! Swinging Squares had one of the largest numbers of attendees (even if the bus did take the scenic route), and many were able to earn their Purple Heart dangle for dancing with 3 callers in their square.  Not an easy feat!! It was absolutely wonderful to have so many of our new dancers attend with us, and we hope this is just the beginning of many more road trips!!

On March 8th we raided the Side Splitter in No. Attleboro.  We brought 12 dancers to them and had a wonderful time with “our own” Bob Butler calling.

Everett Mackin called for our “Wearin’-O-the-Green dance on the 15th.  We hosted 7 squares, many dancers came in their best Irish attire which added to the festive atmosphere! Many, many thanks to all who helped either with set up or brought foods, or broke down.  We couldn’t do this without YOU!

Barker theater tickets are still available, please see Marge Barrett if you are interested.  The performance of “You can’t take it with you” is on April 10th, bus transportation is available.

GRADUATION is right around the corner!! I can’t believe how many new dancers we are graduating this year. Graduation ceremonies will be held following a Pot Luck Supper on April 14th.  All are invited to attend, please bring a dish to share, and feel free to invite family and friends, it’s a great time and we look forward to honoring our new dancers!

Our regular dance is April 19th. This month’s theme is “Tiptoe through the Tulips”, so wear your spring finery and join us “at home” as we welcome spring through dance! As always we ask club members to bring finger foods to share.

Our nominating committee has been hard at work speaking with club members about possibly running for the Board. It’s not too late; if you are interested please see either a member of the nominating committee or a Board member.

REMINDER: THE ANNUAL MEETING IS APRIL 21ST

We will dance for the first half of the night and then hold the meeting and elections.  All “Dues paid members” are eligible to vote.  If you have not yet paid your dues you may do so up until meeting time.

The Hospitality Committee is putting out an urgent plea to all club members.  We need help setting up the kitchen and hall for both Monday night Workshops and Dance nights through the end of the season.  If you are available even for a few weeks, please see Marge Barrett so she can add you to her schedule. And as always, many, many thanks to all those who have helped out, your assistance is much appreciated!

The 50th ANNUAL NEW ENGLAND SQUARE AND ROUND DANCE CONVENTION will have another Kick-Off dance on April 6th from 2 to 5 PM at the Hayloft Barn in Sturbridge Ma. Much like the Winter Ball, there will be many callers and cuers for your dancing pleasure.  We hope to see many of our friends there to help support Massachusetts as they kick off for Convention 2008!  On that note…..ARE YOU READY TO PARTY???? If you have not experienced a convention, there are simply not enough good things to say about attending.  From the brand new dancer to the most experienced, there is something for everyone! The true spirit and camaraderie of square dancing really shines here! There will be a “Parade of Gold” on Saturday night that each club has been invited to join.  Our club will be providing a gold sash to anyone who wishes to participate in the parade to identify you as a member of Swinging Squares. If you are planning to attend, and would like to participate in the parade please see Kat so we have an accurate count for sashes.

The SEMCA King and Queen Ball is fast approaching.  That will be held on May 4th at Plymouth South High School in Plymouth MA. Tickets are just $5.00 in advance $6.00 at the door.  We are still looking for anyone interested in representing our club as “King and Queen”.   If you are interested please let any member of the Board know.  We will continue to offer “our” king and queen free admission to dances throughout the coming season. This is another great dance, and everyone is encouraged to attend.  It is a Mainstream through A-1 level dance; this is one you surely don’t want to miss!

Our last Monday night workshop will be very special this year! On May 19th, Bob will be joined by Nasser Shukayn, a national caller from Texas whose goal it is to call in every state.  We are very fortunate to host both he and his wife Jeanna while they are traveling through New England.  We hope to have a great turnout, not only because it is the last workshop until summer, but more importantly to welcome Nasser and Jeanna! Please be sure to join us, and if possible bring a food to share.

Also upcoming is the Annual Rhody Rover Summer Dance, hosted by the Surfside 8 Square Dance Club.  This will be held on Saturday June 7th.  If you are working toward your Rhody Rover badge this dance is a requirement.

That’s all “The Scoop” for now…Hope everyone is getting in lots of dancing and having fun….looking forward to all of the great events that are coming up!!  See you in a square!

Kat

PS: Send your funniest, touching and all around best convention moments to me and we’ll share then with the club when it’s done!! There are sure to be many…..so don’t miss a one!
